All the rivers in Quintana Roo run underground.

The fresh water of the Mayan Jungle flows slowly to the Caribbean Sea.  This spectacular underground river system has gallons  of water, fresh drinking water, and the most important natural resource the world can boast.

Adding to this, thanks to the effects of water level changes in the past, these fantastic flooded caverns are richly decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, and column forms. Furthermore they are troves of histories – containing archeological, biological, anthropological, and paleontological treasures. Nothing else exists like this on our planet. They are truly UNIQUE in the world.

A shadow of destruction has begun to take over our environment, wrecking havoc with the multi-faceted water ecosystems at play, including the Mesoamerican Coral Reef. It is urgent that the Mexican Federal Government take action to prevent more destruction.

We have asked Mexican President Calderon to decree The Cenotes and the Underground River Systems of Quintana Roo as a federally protected zone.  Our ultimate goal is to attain the status of World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

We demand legal protection of the cenotes and underground river systems.  We will not allow the environmental predators to destroy more.  To them, we send a message:

Aguas con los cenotes (English)

GOLF ON THE BEACH!

The impacts that will be dealt to the vegetation are clearly adverse given to imply the loss of all type of vegetation. These are direct impacts of permanent duration, the effects are irreversible with low probabilities to recuperate.
The zone is the natural habitat of animals, some of the endangered species.
A golf course needs 5 tons of chemicals per year for its upkeep.

Because of the unique properties of this zone the chemicals will do irreversible damage to the reef.

Furthermore the construction of the development kills the principal feeder of the reef.

Golf courses need the usage of chemical compounds such as the MSMA, the Oryzalin, the Dicamba, the Chlorothalonil among many others, to form even level greens for the course and to control weeds and and/or plagues. This is the official program of ecological territorial management of the region.
